About Dr. Lucy Rymer
A psychologist who believes in your capacity to grow
I’m a HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist based near York. I work across NHS and private practice, supporting adults through a wide range of experiences, from trauma and anxiety to emotion dysregulation and the challenges of everyday life.
I’ve always been drawn to understanding people, particularly how our early experiences, relationships, and environments shape the way we think, feel, and relate to ourselves and others. That curiosity is at the heart of everything I do.
My story
Why I became a psychologist
I’ve always been drawn to understanding people, particularly how our early experiences, relationships, emotions, and environments shape the way we think, feel, and relate to ourselves and others. Over time, this developed into a strong interest in trauma, emotion regulation, and the overlap between mental health and neurodevelopmental differences such as autism and ADHD.
What I value most about psychology is being able to offer people a space where they feel genuinely understood, while also helping them make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. That combination of deep understanding and real, practical progress is what drives me.
I work across NHS and private practice, and that dual experience shapes how I think about therapy. It keeps me grounded in what actually helps people, not just what looks good on paper.
How I work
The values I bring to every session
The way I work is grounded in warmth, honesty, curiosity, and collaboration. I believe therapy works best when people feel safe, respected, and never judged.
Warmth and genuine care
I aim to create a space where you can be open about difficult experiences while feeling genuinely supported and never judged.
Curiosity and collaboration
I work with you, not at you. Understanding what’s happening for you and why is always the starting point, not a diagnostic label or a prescribed programme.
Evidence-based practice
I stay close to what the evidence tells us works, and I bring that into sessions in a way that feels meaningful rather than clinical or prescriptive.
Personalised and flexible
No two people are the same. Therapy should be tailored to you, your experiences, and your goals, not a one size fits all process.
Training and experience
Qualifications and background
I’m a HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist with experience working across NHS adult and children’s mental health services, as well as private practice. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies including CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), depending on each client’s needs.
Outside of work
A little about me
Outside of work, I enjoy slower, quieter moments — spending time with my family, long walks with my dog, reading, interiors, and gardening. I find a lot of meaning in creating a calm and intentional home life, and those values spill into how I think about wellbeing more broadly.
I’m also a new mum, which has deepened my appreciation for compassion, balance, and the importance of emotional wellbeing in everyday life. It’s a perspective that I think makes me a better psychologist.
I’m based near York and offer sessions both in person at my therapy room in Warthill and online across the UK.
